Since beginning my legal studies in New York in 2001, I have spent more than 20 years working in the legal departments of entertainment, gaming, and both Japanese and international IT companies. After obtaining my gyosei shoshi license, I expanded my practice to serve as a legal advisor and external counsel, assisting clients through my own office and professional platforms that connect legal practitioners with small and medium-sized businesses.

The office provides support with trusts, divorce agreements, inheritance agreements, and inheritance procedures, including cross-border matters involving Japan and other jurisdictions. I have long-standing experience advising on international estate and family issues—initially through work related to inheritance seminars in Hawaii and later through pro bono activities and requests involving international marriages.

While estate planning and the use of trusts are widely understood in the United States, they remain less common in Japan despite their importance. The office can assist with procedures, terminology, and structural differences between Japan and overseas, and help you assess which approach best suits your needs in terms of both legal framework and cost.

International inheritance, Marriage and Divorce Procedures

When inheritance or marriage involves more than one country, several issues arise—including which country’s laws apply, whether procedures completed in one jurisdiction are recognized in another, and how documents should be structured to remain valid across borders. Understanding the applicable legal systems—both civil law and common law—is essential to avoid procedural issues later on.

The office assists with international inheritance and marriage/divorce procedures, including the preparation of agreements, notarization, apostilles, and certified translations where required. I have long-standing experience in cross-border matters and work with affiliated lawyers, accountants, and translators overseas, enabling coordinated support when needed.
